Birdlovers’ paradise
Sierra de Guara was declared a natural park in 1990. It has a surface area of 47,000 hectares and a peripheral special protection area for birds covering some 33,700 hectares.
Sierra de Guara provides a refuge for the more than 160 species that can be found in the area, among which are: Emberiza (Cirl Bunting, Yellowhammer), Fringillidae (Bullfinch, European Serin, European Greenfinch, Linnet, Chaffinch, Brambling), Laniidae (Red-backed Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Great Grey Shrike), Sittidae (Eurasian Nuthatch, Wallcreeper, Short-toed Treecreeper), Paridae (Long-tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Crested Tit, Great Tit) Muscicapidae (Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher), Sylviidae (Blackcap, Orphean Warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Whitethroat, Spectacled Warbler, Subalpine Warbler, Dartford Warbler), Acrocephalidae (Eurasian Reed Warbler), Phylloscopidae (Leaf Warbler), Meropidae (European Bee-eater, European Roller), Caprimulgidae (Nightjar), Apodidae (Swift).
The sheer rocky walls of Sierra de Guara provide a haven for birds that nest among the rocks, such as Aquila chrysaetos (Golden Eagle), Gyps fulvus (Griffon Vulture), Gypaetus barbatus (Bearded Vulture), Neopfron percnopterus (Egyptian Vulture) and Bubo bubo (Eurasian Eagle Owl).
